- In the 1939 film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ , Margaret Hamilton who played Miss Gulch and the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’ carried a broom made of asbestos – the witch melted but the broom did not.
- In 1907 brown asbestos was discovered in Transvaal, South Africa. It was given the name ‘amosite’ from an acronym of ‘ asbestos Mines of South Africa’ from the Amosa mine.
- Asbestos was in regular use in the old Pinewood filmsets, particularly as a fire retardant and was used in the inflammable special effects in Bond films. Asbestos was used to lag pipes and asbestos boards were used to line the sets.
